Pet Runestone Abilities

Pet Runestones are magical abilities that can be taught to compatible Meta Pets. Once learned, combat runes can trigger from the pet's melee attacks, unleashing elemental damage, area attacks, debuffs, healing, or crowd-control effects.

How Pet Runestones Work

Learning a Runestone

To teach a pet a runestone ability:

Each pet has a limited number of runestone ability slots.

Runestone XP Messages

The pet gump has a Runestone XP toggle next to Apply Runestone.

This only controls system messages. It does not affect how much XP the runes gain.

Combat Proc System

Most combat runes trigger from successful melee hits.

When your pet lands a melee hit:

This means:

Proc Chance

Combat runestone proc chance increases with rune level.

Rune Level Proc Chance
Level 1 4%
Level 2 6%
Level 3 8%
Level 4 10%
Level 5 12%
Level 6 14%
Level 7 16%
Level 8 18%
Level 9 20%
Level 10 25%

If a pet has several runes, their chances are combined into a weighted table, but the total proc chance is capped.

Example:

Rune Chance
Poison Rune 12%
Bleed Rune 10%

The pet does not get three separate rolls. Instead, the system chooses one possible rune from the weighted table.

So several runes increase ability variety, not raw proc spam.

Shared Cooldown

Combat runes share a global proc cooldown.

Some runes also have their own additional cooldowns.

This is especially important for DOT, field, drain, and poison runes so they cannot refresh endlessly.

Examples:

Rune Type Extra Cooldown Purpose
Bleed / Bloodstrike Prevents bleed from being constantly refreshed.
Necrotic Fog Prevents toxic fog from becoming permanent.
Life Eater Prevents constant life-drain uptime.
Hellfire / Solar Flare / Soul Maelstrom Prevents repeated field or burn stacking.

Damage Scaling

Damage runes scale with level.

Damage is shown before target resistances.

Some runes deal their damage in different ways:

AOE runes are intended to hit multiple valid targets, but each target should only be hit once per proc by the main effect.

Valid Targets

Runestone abilities are designed for creature combat.

They should not damage:

Runestones are meant to hit hostile creatures only.

Leveling Runestones

Each runestone ability has its own level and experience.

Runes no longer gain XP from simply activating.

Instead, runes gain XP when the Meta Pet gains valid kill XP.

When the pet kills a valid monster:

Example:

Pet Kill XP Eligible Runes XP Per Rune
900 XP 1 rune 900 XP
900 XP 2 runes 450 XP each

This means runestone leveling follows the same kind of grind as Meta Pet leveling.

Rune XP Requirements

Runestone XP requirements use the Meta Pet-style level curve.

Rune Level XP Required To Reach Next Level
Level 1 → 2 3,000
Level 2 → 3 7,500
Level 3 → 4 20,000
Level 4 → 5 50,000
Level 5 → 6 125,000
Level 6 → 7 250,000
Level 7 → 8 500,000
Level 8 → 9 1,000,000
Level 9 → 10 1,750,000

Level 10 is the current maximum rune level.

Upgrading a Runestone

When a runestone reaches enough XP to level up, it does not level automatically.

Instead, it becomes ready for upgrade.

The pet gump will show that the ability is ready.

To upgrade it:

Example:

A different runestone type will not upgrade it.
