Grappling Hooks & Boarding
Overview
Grappling Hooks enable boarding-style ship-to-ship interaction. Used correctly, they allow you to attempt to latch onto an enemy ship and board.
How to Use (Player Flow)
- Double-click your Grappling Hook.
- Target the enemy ship (or the target location/ship object when prompted).
- If conditions are valid, the grappling action succeeds and boarding interaction occurs.
Common Requirements
Boarding generally requires:
- You are alive
- You are close enough to the enemy ship (range rules apply)
- The target ship is valid for grappling
- Your position allows “footing” / boarding placement
If any check fails, you’ll receive a failure message such as:
- “You fail to find footing on the enemy ship.”
What causes “fail to find footing”
This message usually means one of the following is true:
- You targeted outside valid range
- The enemy ship is moving or positioned so there is no valid boarding tile
- The line / geometry between ships does not allow a safe placement
- Your shard rules block boarding due to state (combat/criminal/region restrictions)
Best Practices
- Grapple from stable distance (don’t attempt from extreme range).
- Aim at the enemy ship’s deck area rather than empty water.
- Slow down / align ships if your shard supports it; boarding needs usable placement tiles.
